A heritage project funded by HLF and Beamish Museum as part of the RISE project. It was managed by the Forge, which was working with primary schools in Durham to examine the impact of cultural activity on learning.
Catchgate Primary School is in Annfield Plain, Country Durham, close to Stanley and Consett. The Wor Catchgate project was designed to engage schoolchildren from Catchgate and their parents/carers to explore the heritage of the area through stories and traditions.
We delivered a series of sessions looking at school, sport (the area has a great boxing tradition), toys, baking, work, craft, and family. Information was gathered from the children and their families and we designed and produced a booklet with a set of recipe cards and instructions for making proggy mats, pace eggs, and rag dolls.
