Rockcliffe First School in Whitley Bay has an excellent archive of school logbooks and photographs. They wanted to digitise these items and present them through an online resource. We helped the school successfully apply for a HLF grant to achieve this, and built a heritage project for them.
We digitised about 900 pages of the two logbooks dating from 1906 and 1908 to about 1950. Memory-gathering events were held and the schoolchildren interviewed ex-pupils and staff from the School.
Interpretation panels were designed by the children and ourselves and are on display in the schoolyard. A series of newsletters keeps people informed of progress.
A WordPress website was created to provide an online resource about the Rockcliffe area and Rockcliffe First School. This incorporated a ‘page turning’ version of the school diaries.
