North Tyneside Council and North Shields Library approached us to design and deliver a heritage project based on the maritime and fishing history of North Shields. We worked with four North Shields primary and first schools to produce a series of simple illustrations of fishing boats.
We made contact with a retired North Shields fisherman who provided us with picture reference for over 1000 trawlers. The children drew a selection of the boats and old North Shields street scenes to our instructions. Their images were digitised and colourised and then printed onto large semi-opaque flags which were installed in the windows of North Shields Library and Customer First Centre.
The artwork was called ‘Turning the Tides’ – a reference to the past and the regeneration of North Shields town centre.
